Cleaning House Ruins
The Perumnas area in Bairopite, in the western part of Dili, was severly damaged during the calamities following the vote for independence from Indonesia 30 August 1999. Numerous people here and many other places were forced to live in partially repaired buildings when returning after being displaced. This woman is cleaning up the ruins of their house before moving in.

Ruin of a Home
House in the Perumnas Bairopite area, destroyed during the calamities following the vote for independence from Indonesia 30 August 1999. The graffiti indicates that the neighbourhood was burnt 13 September by BriMob police soldiers (Indonesian federal police) previously stationed there. Furthermore that an East Timorese has taken over the house (which previously was owned by an Indonesian).

Fire in the Chapel
Interior from the chapel in the residence of bishop Carlos Belo (1996 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate), destroyed during a vicious attack 6 September 1999, as thousands of terrified people sought refuge there. Even the statue of the virgin Mary was vandalised, it’s nose cut off.
